When I started trying to keep Sarracenia and Venus Fly Trap plants I quickly read about not using tap water. Apparently it has too many minerals in it and of course Chlorine/Flouride is something to be aware of.
Seems carnivorous plants are rather fussy about there water, they don’t like fertilizer, they don’t like regular water. Picky little plants!
I started using spring water – that’s pretty pure, right?
Well my plants didn’t exactly thrive in spring water either. I was still getting something wrong in my care of my carnivorous plants.
Back to the carnivorous plant groups and forums then, more reading needed. Following some discussions there I learnt the recommendation is to use de-ionised water. So where to I get that from?
Amazon it turns out.
So now I am regularly ordering a few bottles of de-ionised water intended for car batteries!
It’s worked though, my Venus Fly Trap is looking much better since switching to this water. My Sarracenia still has something no quite right though. While there are some small new growths, it certainly doesn’t seem as vigorous as other Sarracenia I’ve seen at the same time of year.
I wonder if using spring water has caused damage in the time I was using it, and that the fly trap has survived better than the Sarracenia.
